Whistler, BC (Sports Network) - American skier Lindsey Vonn had her hopes for a third Olympic medal dashed Friday when she missed a gate early in the first run of the slalom -- the final event in women's alpine skiing at the Vancouver Games.

Skiing 10th, Vonn was .44 seconds behind the pace set by Germany's Maria Riesch after the first split and shortly after that straddled a gate, eliminating her from the event.

Vonn won gold in downhill and bronze in super-G at the Vancouver Olympics, but failed to finish her other three events. She crashed and missed a gate during the slalom portion of super combined last week and also broke her right pinkie finger Wednesday in giant slalom.

Vonn suffered the finger injury in another crash Wednesday, but after taking some slalom runs on a training hill Thursday said she would "try and race" on Friday.

Using a modified skiing glove that was equipped with a brace for her broken finger, Vonn seemed tentative during Friday's run at Whistler Creekside. Snowy conditions on the mountain also made visibility a factor, particularly at the top of the course.

The slalom is not a strong event for Vonn. Of her 31 career World Cup victories, only two have come in the discipline.

Vonn's U.S. teammate, Julia Mancuso, opted not to race in the slalom because it was not a strong event for her. Mancuso won two silver medals at these Games.

Riesch, a close friend of Vonn's, was the fifth skier Friday morning and her time of 50.75 seconds is still the pace to beat. Riesch won gold in super combined on Feb. 18.
